Economic Empowerment and Financial Literacy Training's

02/15/2017

Our projects in Uganda so far have piloted extensive learning in developing this phase of the project, partnering with local sexual minority NGOs, dialogue with beneficiaries, Youth and local structures has been a significant internal source of learning.Economic empowerment is a key issue. The employment obstacles faced by LBTIQ refugee youth have language barriers and household constraints present, LBTI youth must also contend with policies surrounding their legal eligibility to work. LBTI youths are officially excluded from participating in Uganda's formal economy. Moreover, some Ugandans believe that they are not supposed to employ sexual minorities since homosexuality has been criminalized not realizing that with the proper status and documentation it is legal to hire them. Additionally, the unemployment rate of youth is high and discrimination is a significant problem that LBTI refugee youth face due to ageism. Most organizations require specific education qualifications, marital status, job experience, age and connections this makes it almost impossible for LBTI youth to secure jobs.
