The Intersex Storm Project

11/16/2018

Intersex Awareness.

Intersex persons face violence, discrimination, stigma, harassment, and persecution on account of their sex characteristics, which do not fit binary notions of typical male or female bodies.

Intersex persons routinely face forced medical surgeries that are conducted at a young age without free or informed consent. These interventions jeopardize their physical integrity and ability to live free.

Corrective surgeries have been conducted on millions of babies and children world wide and no consent is given by the children.

In order to raise awareness on this issue Simma Africa has been working with medical doctors in rural areas to help mothers of intersex babies understand that their babies are Normal.

There is a lot of superstition surrounding Intersex babies in African Society, some believe hey are cursed babies, others believe they are product of witchcraft, and other cases reported mothers leaving intersex babies in hospitals.

For these reasons Simma Africa holds conversations with nurses, midwives and medical personnel in central, eastern and northern regions in Uganda raising awareness on intersex rights and awareness on ending corrective surgery in the intersex babies

The Intersex Storm is an initiative by Simma Africa Creative Arts Foundation that is tailored to cater for the protection and promotion of the rights of intersex persons in Uganda.
